Self-interest is a good thing in a President.

The Republicans are displaying intellectual bankruptcy in their defense of President Trump by allowing the Democrats to frame the President’s motives during the Ukraine call. I wonder if the Republicans can hold two concepts in their minds at the same time. We are all driven by self-interest. I asked a 747 airplane captain if he was stressed more now in his career now that he is responsible for so many lives. He said no, he went on to say, his only concern was for him to move from point A to point B safely. That self-interest in the form of self-preservation on the pilot’s part was the best insurance for the passengers.

Like the pilot, the President is responsible for the safety of our citizens by securing our nation against all threats whether be it domestic or foreign. Slow Joe Biden is shown in the polls to be our next president. If there was foreign entanglement hindering Biden, then the voters should know of it before they vote. President Trump was doing his mandated duties while he was serving his own self-interest.

I did my task at work to the best of my abilities because I wanted to keep my employment and advance to a higher position. That self-interest on my part was good for me and it was good for my employer. A president is motivated by self-interest to do his or her best so they are reelected. In the United States, a president in their second term is still motivated by self-interest. If he or she was to just coast through their second term in bed while watching television, then they would be removed from office.

Like all of us, our presidents are motivated by self-interest to keep their job. Are we going to impeach a president for negotiating the best trade that she or he could do because we know they only did it to be reelected?
