We are so close to having the firepower of yore. Over the course of five weeks, I searched for tent cities in U.S. territories, including Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as in Caracas (Venezuela), Taiwan, and Cuba. I grew up believing an honest hour’s work should buy an honest meal. In the late 1980s, the federal minimum was $3.35 an hour. When the wage went up to $3.75 in 1990, a Big Mac meal back then—burger, medium fries, medium Coke—ran about $3.50 to $4.00 before tax. I recently learned about Iran’s ghost fleet of oil tankers that Iran uses to circumvent the international sanctions on its oil exports. As much as 5 million barrels of crude are being transferred Ship to Ship [STS] to Chinese tankers daily in the Malacca Strait. Our Virginia 774 class submarines haven’t had the MQ-9B SeaGuardians integrated into the weapon control system.
